The Seasonal Cycle and the Business Cycle

Since 1984, the variance of U.S. output growth has decreased about 75 percent compared with the postwar period ending in 1983. One major hypothesis about the decrease is that a fundamental structural change took place in the U.S. economy in the 1980s.
