Inflation and Taxes: Disincentives for Capital Formation - Review

One of the disappointing features of the current expansion has been the sluggish growth of business investment spending. Businesses appear to be more reluctant to make outlays for purchases of new plant and equipment than was the case in previous periods of economic growth. Since the beginning of the current expansion in early 1975, investment expenditures have grown at a 9.4 percent annual rate, compared to an average 11.8 percent rate for comparable periods in the four previous recoveries.

Automobile Sales in Perspective - Review

Due to both its relative size and its tendency toward large cyclical fluctuations, the automobile industry has tended to receive a great deal of attention in analyses of current economic conditions. In terms of new car sales, developments of the past three years have been particularly well publicized, popular topics of concern. In part, this has probably been a response to the impact of the oil embargo which highlighted developments in a number of industries. The purpose of this article is to provide some perspective on this recent period by comparing it with the pattern of new car sales in the previous three recession/recovery periods.

A Primer on Inflation: Its Conception, Its Costs, Its Consequences - Review

A great deal of public rhetoric has recently been advanced regarding our present problem of inflation. In fact, as the various price indices moved progressively higher, inflation was elevated to the position of “Public Enemy No. 1.” As we crossed the bridge from single- to double-digit inflation, public discussion of inflation intensified. Concern has been expressed that that bridge might very well he burned behind us unless steps are taken immediately to assure a return trip to price stability.
