Eighth District Banks in 1989: In the Eye of the Storm?

Michelle A. Clark compares the performance of Eighth District commercial banks in 1989 with that of their national peers. Because District banks were largely untouched by some of the major problems facing the industry in 1989, especially losses from real estate and foreign loans, they were able to outperform their U.S. counterparts in measures of profitability, asset quality, and capital adequacy.
