Because the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis has long considered the monetary base an important variable in economic analysis, it has published monetary base data since August 1968 and has published numerous articles explaining the derivation of the monetary base and its uses in monetary analysis. 

Recent U.S. monetary actions have been viewed, in part, as a reaction to the rapid depreciation of the U.S. dollar on foreign exchange markets over much of last year.
