January's Employment Situation

On February 1, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that total nonfarm payrolls increased by 304,000 in January. The largest sector gains occurred in leisure and hospitality (+74,000), construction (+52,000), and health care (+42,000). The unemployment rate rose to 4.0 percent. The BLS also revised November's total nonfarm payrolls up from +176,000 to +196,000 and December's total nonfarm payrolls down from +312,000 to +222,000.
