Center for Regional Economics

The St. Louis Fed's Burgundy Books
The Research Division's Center for Regional Economics—8th District (CRE8®) has begun producing a report, called the Burgundy Book, for each of the regions (or zones) surrounding its four offices (St. Louis, Little Rock, Louisville, and Memphis). The Burgundy Books provide anecdotal information along with formal data and are released four times per year (schedule).

In January 2005, the Research Division of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis established its Center for Regional Economics – 8th District (CRE8®). The role of CRE8® is to provide and facilitate rigorous economic analysis of policy issues affecting local, state, and regional economies – particularly those in the 8th Federal Reserve District.

Recent and ongoing research projects by CRE8 staff include

  • The effects of NAFTA on state exports
  • The economics of airport expansion
  • The economic impacts of gaming and lotteries
  • Creating a policy environment for entrepreneurs
  • Education quality and housing markets
  • Tax competition
  • Prime and sub-prime mortgage markets
  • Wage inequality and urbanization
  • The economics of urban light rail
  • State and local business cycles

CRE8® conducts its own research and organizes policy forums, conferences, and symposia that highlight economic research by others. These events are intended to inform and initiate discussions among policymakers in the states and communities of the 8th District.

We have also formed the 8th District Business and Economics Research Group (BERG), a research forum that includes university-based business and economics research centers in the states of the 8th District.
