The FRED Blog: Unemployment Insurance Requirements

When a worker is unemployed, local unemployment insurance can bridge the gap between jobs. However, being unemployed does not guarantee that you'll receive benefits from your local unemployment insurance program. Often there are eligibility criteria, such as previous work requirements, waiting periods, eligibility periods, and asset tests. Political choices behind these criteria can be stringent. A recent FRED Blog post examined unemployment claims along with the civilian unemployment rate and found that, most of the time, only a minority of the unemployed receive benefits. It is important for a worker to understand the government's policies and criteria when applying for unemployment insurance.
