September's Employment Situation

On October 6, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 33,000 in September. The unemployment rate dipped slightly to 4.2%. The largest sector job losses occurred in food services and drinking establishments (-105,000). Workers were off payrolls, likely due to the effects of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Sector gains occurred in healthcare (+23,000), transportation and warehousing (+22,000), professional and business services (+13,000), and financial activities (+10,000). Read the full release here.
