July's Employment Situation

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 209,000 in July with food services and drinking places, professional and business services, and healthcare seeing the largest sector gains, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.  The unemployment rate was little changed at 4.3 percent.

  • The food services and drinking places sector added 53,000 jobs
  • Professional and business services added 49,000 jobs
  • Health care added 49,000 jobs

In addition, total nonfarm payroll employment numbers for May and June were revised. May’s numbers were revised down from +152,000 to +145,000, and June’s numbers were revised up from +222,000 to +231,000.
