December's Employment Situation

On January 5, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 148,000 in December. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.1 percent. The biggest job gains occurred in the following sectors:

  • Healthcare employment increased by 31,000
  • Construction employment increased by 30,000
  • Manufacturing employment increased by 25,000

The labor force participation rate was unchanged at 62.7 percent, and the number of long-term unemployed was little changed at 1.5 million.
