August's Employment Situation
On September 1, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 156,000 in August. The unemployment rate was little changed at 4.4%, and the largest sector gains occurred in manufacturing (+36,000), construction (+28,000), and professional and technical services (+22,000). Household survey data collection was completed before Hurricane Harvey, and the BLS reported that the storm had no “discernible effect” on the data for August. Read the full release here.
