April's Employment Situation

     On May 5, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported total nonfarm payroll employment in April increased by 211,000, and the labor force participation rate was virtually unchanged at 62.9 percent. The unemployment rate remained 4.4 percent and the number of long-term unemployed was essentially unchanged at 1.6 million. The largest sector gains occurred in leisure and hospitality (+55,000 jobs) and healthcare and social assistance (+37,000 jobs). The retail trade sector lost 30,000 jobs. See the full summary here.
